My time spent working in a Fabric store taught me many creative tricks for improving my space. One of which is how versatile Fabrics are.
When we think of FABRICS otherwise known as material, cloth, rags, etc. we immediately think of Sewing. Believe me when I tell you this method of WALLPAPERING is so easy and looks so professional you'll wonder why you haven't thought of it before.
So you're thinking you may want to paint that bland wall in the Dining area of your house or apartment. If you rent you'll have to paint it back when you leave. If you don't already have the brushes, rollers, paint trays, drop cloths, or budget to buy the paint which has become pretty pricey these days than here's what I did...
I used Fabric to Wallpaper my dining area and it looks like I hired an Interior Designer. The texture and pattern created a mood that I just couldn't find with a coat of paint.
I measured the wall, top to bottom, and side to side, (the length and width) allowing a one inch underlap all around. I then went on line to get some ideas for fabrics. You will want to feel the texture so unless it's returnable, shop at a local store. You can search for remnants also. One of the best fabrics is Home Dec, or Tapestry. Upholstery fabric is very durable and can be matched to a chair or sofa if you desire it to be. Outdoor fabric is great for enclosed patios or porches.
A good local fabric store is hard to find but they do exist. Some of them have coupons available on line or in the store. If you don't know the amount you need you will definately need your measurements with you when you go. Since Fabric is sold by the yard you'll need to figure out how many yards you need and which way the design will hang. I recommend starting with a smaller wall the first time you do this or a design that will line up easily.
Once you have chosen your fabric you can cut it to the size you need and use an edge protector or sew it so that it doesn't unravel or frey. Then you have two options for hanging it. You can staple or glue it to the wall. By stapling it is easier to remove should you want to change it later on or glue it for a more permanent use.
Either way works fine. The key is that it is a tight fit or taut and lays flat on the wall. It will look like a Masterpiece when you have finished hanging it!

This article is a good DIY interior design tip. For an even better finish a professional decorator/designer would specify that a wooden frame is constructed. The fabric is fastened to the frame and it is the frame which is attached to the wall rather than the fabric. This also provides a few cms of air insulation wihtout damaging the wall. Panelling ! The author is right - the right fabric on the wall can look amazing
