Growing Up In New England

September in New England

September in New England was always my favorite time of  year, other than Christmas of course.  The Autumn leaves beginning to change colors, crisp and falling from the trees.  The smell of firewood burning warmed all my senses.

I did quite a bit of writing while I was there.  The words came so easily and frequently.  They say that people who live in a cold climate have warm hearts, I agree.  Time and time again I've experienced the kindness of Northern Hospitality.  I've had the pleasure of swimming in the ocean and lakes.  Water and Snow Skiing were seasonal sports for us along with hay rides, campfires, clambakes and mountain climbing that sometimes turned into mountain falling!  We were always encouraged by Mother Nature.  When it snowed we made Snow Angels, and when it was 90 degrees we cooled off by taking a swim and eating watermelon followed by a seed spitting contest.  Oh man the things we did just having good clean fun!

Apple orchards and Pumpkin patches were at the top of my list for hanging out with friends.   Shopping Malls weren't built yet!  I kinda miss those days, but I am glad we have computers, headphones, microwaves, and a few more of the  conveniences we have become so accustomed to.  I love the finer things in life, but have an everlasting appreciation for the good ole days.

Some of the best places to visit if you ever get a chance are Mystic Seaport, Mystic CT and Yale University in New Haven, CT, If you are travelling in the direction of Maine be sure to visit Peaks Island, off Portland. You literally can pull up your own Lobster pot and enjoy the best Maine lobster in your entire life.  In nearby areas of western Mass you will absolutely love the Quabin Resovoir and Mt. Tom reservation. Downtown Holyoke Mass is known as the Emerald City, lots of Irish folk there and the St. Patrick's Day Parade and festivities are like no other.  Cape Cod is wonderful in the Spring.  You have to experience the smokehouses in Vermont, the Maple Syrup is sweet and the maple sugar candies are a treat you'll never forget.  You can walk it off in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and take a rest in the lodge with a cozy fireside table and hot toddy.

The best time of year to visit New England starts in September.  It is without a doubt a place to remember.
